This is our fantastic new children’s home in Namugongo, Uganda. It was purchased in January 2005 and we only had two weeks to get it ready for the children to be transferred from our rented house and admit the new ones who were waiting for a place. The whole project with the purchase of the house and the necessary building work to complete it has cost us in the region of £80,000. Although we had some money put aside for the building, a large proportion has had to be borrowed and so we are working very hard to raise the capital to repay it.
Re - roofing:
We were aware that the property was in need of some major work as it had not been completed and had been standing empty for quite a long time. It needed electrical work, plumbing, plastering, painting and in some places re-roofing, these works are now completed and it looks great.
The toilet block:
One thing was certain, we would not be building latrine toilets outside, as was the case in most properties in Uganda. We wanted toilets that would be easily kept clean, user friendly and flushing, so this is the toilet block we had built. It has six separate toilets, two shower rooms and facilities for the laundry. You can also see the water tank, which is fed from the mains, and we also collect rainwater in a large tank for general use.
Front view of house:
The inside of the house has been completed but some cosmetic work still needs to be done outside. You can see a separate building being constructed in the background; this is a wooden structure that was moved from our rented premises, which is used for visitors and as a classroom for giving tuition to the children.
The children and staff are so happy in their new home but we still need considerable help in paying for the project.
