The children’s work in Uganda started in January 2003 with the sponsorship of thirty children in their own homes. The need for a children’s home became evident with the constant sickness amongst the children which included malaria and T.B. this was due to the difficult home conditions.
Our first children’s home was a rented semi detached bungalow, one part being for the girls and the other for the boys. It was a nice building but was only a temporary measure as it could not accommodate any more children and applications for new children were being received regularly.
We now have a new children’s home in Namugongo (see separate page) which was purchased in January 2005, it can accommodate over one hundred children with a separate baby unit which is at the planning stage.
As in India, all our staff are nationals who are trained and dedicated for ensuring the best care for the children. Our children attend the local schools to enable them to be part of the community and make friends outside the home. Education is important in African life and great emphasis is put on encouraging the children by providing daily tuition which has already made a big difference to their progress.
Most of our children have lost parents through Aids and were either part of an extended family or being cared by grandparents. With the provision of mosquito nets, a healthy diet and good medical care, the children’s health and happiness has improved considerably.
